RELATED: First-Person Shooters That Support Non-Lethal Runs
The theme of Cyberpunk 2077 is that the only limit to what players can do is what they’re willing to become. And, both the game and the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime on Netflix execute this concept amazingly. Through technology and cybernetics, people in this world can become deadly killing machines or perform otherwise impossible feats such as literally jumping while in the air or launching themselves two stories in a single leap. There are two jump-modifying Leg Cyberware, Fortified Ankles, and Reinforced Tendons. Fortified Ankles will unlock the Charged Jump, allowing players to charge up a jump and leap high into the air. On the other hand, installing Reinforced Tendons will allow the player to jump a second time when already in the air. Obviously, there’s no one option that’s vastly superior to the other, but they do serve different purposes.
Updated December 1, 2022 by Jacob Buchalter: Even after 9+ large updates to the game since its initial release at the end of 2020, there are still only three different types of Leg Cyberware to be found in Cyberpunk 2077, and only two of them actually modify V’s Jump in any way. There are the Fortified Ankles that grant the Charge Jump and are great for getting on top of buildings or high places quickly. Reinforced Tendons, the other option, will grant a Double Jump which adds some verticality to combat and also allows V to cover a lot of distance horizontally. And, as a surprise third choice, there is the Epic-Variant of the Fortified Ankles only obtainable from Fingers that add a Hover feature to the Charge Jump, allowing players to leap up, pause for a second or two in the air, and then fall back down. But, between a Double Jump and a Charge Jump, which one reigns supreme?
The Argument For Charge Jump
Let’s give some arguments for both sides and then a brief overview of what the Cyberpunk community as a whole seems to prefer. That way, players can decide for themselves which ones they want to use. So, first up is Charge Jump obtained through the Fortified Ankles Cyberware, and it’s a bit of an uphill battle arguing for this one.
While the Charge Jump does allow players to get on top of smaller buildings in one jump, leap over walls, and climb Night City to find great spots for different photos, it’s only slightly better than the Double Jump in pure vertical coverage. Plus, indoors, it’s almost useless, and even in the situations indoors where it would be useful, players still need to charge it before jumping, adding a second or two of time between wanting to go somewhere and actually doing it.
However, there is absolutely a case to be made for the Epic-Variant of the Fortified Ankles. Not only does this version of Leg Cyberware reduce all fall damage by 15 percent, but it also adds the ability for Hover Jumps where players can stop themselves mid-air and hover for about 2 seconds by using whatever their aim-down-sights input is. Now, 2 seconds may not sound like much, but this is plenty of time to get across a long gap or, more realistically, trigger a Quickhack.
In fact, this Leg Cyberware is incredibly useful for some of the more broken Hacker builds as it allows a player to jump up from behind a wall, Quickhack someone, fall back down into cover, and repeat this however many times they want. Plus, if used in combination with the Sandevistan, the 2 seconds of hover turns into something more like 5 to 6 seconds, giving V plenty of time to do whatever they want in the air.
The Argument For Double Jump
The Double Jump from Reinforced Tendons, on the other hand, is the more “typical” choice, as double jumps have been a staple of gaming for decades. Players are familiar with the concept of double jumping, how to use it, and why it adds so much to maneuverability. With Double Jump, players have more options for getting into places. If they need to get into a building that’s locked, they can go to the building next door that’s unlocked, climb it, and double jump to their desired building to get in from the roof.
And, most importantly, Double Jump just makes it easier for players to adventure around Night City with CDProjekt Red’s very own version of John Wick, doing whatever they want with little consequence. With Double Jump, players can use it to get across obstacles in a firefight, hopping from storage container to storage container to reach their target faster.
When exploring, they can use it to hop from rooftop to rooftop like they’re Spider-Man. And, in a sticky situation where they’re falling to their death, they can double jump close to the ground to cancel all momentum and save their life.
The Choice The Community Prefers On Average
Overall, neither option for Leg Cyberware is leaps and bounds better than the other. But, from looking around in the Cyberpunk2077 Reddit, the discussion boards for the game, and a few other places, it seems like Double Jump is what people recommend on average. As a close second, players like to recommend the Epic-Variant of the Fortified Ankles because technically it can also “double jump” if the Hover is timed correctly, which is something not many people know.
And, there are still a lot of people that swear by Charge Jump, but they are outnumbered by Double Jump fans. Regardless, either option works for V’s adventures in Night City, as it, as always, comes down to personal preference.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
