Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City is rich with lore, but it’s also a home for retro-futuristic car enthusiasts. Driving around Night City is a big part of the game, whether it’s the Beast in Me racing quests or tracking down Delamain’s lost vehicles in the Epistrophy quests. Though players can get a free bike pretty earlier on (sad as the ending for the person who owned this bike was), eventually most players start to look for other high-end options they can find.
Updated January 28th, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: Though Cyberpunk 2077 has had a bit of a resurgence as of late due to the updates to the game, the upcoming DLC, and the massively successful Netflix series, the ins and outs of the game aren’t completely well-known by the player base. There are a lot of quest options, unlockables, and just general knowledge about Cyberpunk 2077 that players simply don’t know, and the method of obtaining the Quadra Type-66 is one of them. So, let’s go over both ways V can go about getting this car.
How Does V ‘Earn’ This Car?
There are a number of sweet rides that V can obtain for free by doing side quests or even just happening upon them during an opportune moment. Most Cyberpunk players will want to look out for these methods because cars don’t come cheap in Night City. Thankfully, some of the fastest and most useful vehicles in the game tend to have some method by which V can obtain them completely free of charge, and the Quadra Type-66, otherwise known as the ‘Cthulhu’ is one of them.
The Cthulhu is owned by Peter Sampson, usually just known as Sampson, a racer that V will meet during The Beast in Me death race side quests with Claire Russell, the bartender of the iconic Afterlife Bar. During this questline, after successfully completing the third qualifying race (in which players need to finish in the top three in two out of three of these qualifying races), Claire will then reveal that Sampson killed her husband during a race and she wants to get back at him.
Luckily, if V plays their cards right, they’ll walk away with not only Sampson’s Cthulhu (after they get his blood stains out of it) but Claire will give away her modified Thorton Mackinaw truck to V too as a reward for helping her out.
How To ‘Only’ Receive The Type-66 Cthulhu
If players only want the Cthulhu, during the final Beast in Me race, they’ll need to stay and finish the race instead of following Sampson when he veers off even though this choice will make Claire very upset, at least at the moment. Winning the race this way does provide some benefits and ultimately ends the questline, but Claire holds on to The Beast for herself.
How To Get Both The Quadra Type-66 “Cthulhu” & Thorton Mackinaw “Beast” Free
But if players want the best option to both help Claire and also obtain both vehicles (Beast and Cthulhu) they’ll need to make the following choices. When Claire is talking to V overlooking Night City after the third qualifying race, make sure to tell her “My priority’s winning.”
Later on, when V and Claire confront Sampson after he’s crashed, tell Claire to “Let him go.” If the right choices are made, she’ll listen to V and walk away. Both Sampson and Claire will give their rides to V as thanks for picking the third option in this relatively linear questline, but Sampson may take some in-game time before he texts V about it. Still, getting a reward from the guy who murdered Claire’s husband will likely leave a bad taste in most players’ mouths.
How To Buy The Quadra Type-66 Cthulhu
If the player didn’t make the ‘right’ choices and Sampson died at Claire’s hands, V can also purchase the Cthulhu later on from Regina Jones. They’ll need to wait until the fixer herself, Regina, contacts them with the offer, and they can purchase the car for a hefty 76,000 Eddies.
So, obviously, getting Cthulhu for free from Sampson is the ideal option if possible, but at least both options are there for players who feel Sampson needs to die but still want his car.
Quadra Type-66 ‘Cthulhu’ Stats & Comparison To Other Night City Vehicles
Now here’s the real question, is this ‘Cthulhu car’ worth all the effort, moral processing, and even murder of Peter Sampson? Absolutely. In stats alone, this car is one of the top ten fastest cars in the game (ranking about eighth overall).
Not only that, but out of all the Quadra Type-66 cars in the game, of which there are 6, the Cthulhu is the one that looks the most like a muscle car straight out of a Fast and the Furious movie. Just keep in mind that the car isn’t known for its fantastic handling and it only has one passenger seat, so there are, always, both pros and cons to consider.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
