This much was revealed during a recent interview held between GameSpot and CD Projekt Red’s associate design director Kyle Rowley, with the latter stating that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature both ranged and melee combat, and their mechanics are rooted in lessons learned from The Witcher 3. As explained by Rowley, “We learned quite a lot from the combat in Witcher 3, and we’re translating that to the lessons we learned in the gameplay about how to do melee and try to transfer that to Cyberpunk,” with the shift from first-person to third-person seemingly not getting in the way of the translation.

When it comes to Cyberpunk 2077’s weapons, Rowley revealed that each will fall into the three general categories of power, tech, and smart. Power weapons are going to be more “traditional weapons that you would have nowadays,” such as high-impact guns. “When you fire them, we may have, for example, exaggerated hit reactions and staggers to kind of emphasize the hit impacts,” he said. Tech weapons, though, focus primarily on wall penetration, NPCs, and other objects, while , smart weapons can track and follow targets around the games.

While guns seem to be at the forefront of the combat within Cyberpunk 2077, which will lend itself well to its first-person perspective, Rowley has declared that the game is not a shooter, but instead, very much an RPG. Rowley stated, “It’s a role-playing game with some shooter elements, rather than a shooter with role-playing laid on top of it. There’s very deep progression systems, so all the things you’d expect from a CD Projekt game.” Al things considered, Cyberpunk definitely sounds like an ambitious project worth looking forward to, especially with there being no microtransactions.

Cyberpunk is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but lacks an official release date.
