The Cubs outfielder was making a diving catch when he hit the back wall in the bottom of the first inning against the Giants. He walked off under his own power but said he felt pain in his torso and abdominal area. He later was seen with ice wrapped around his torso.

Heyward was reaching for Denard Span’s fly ball to right center when he injured himself. The Cubs staff came out to check on him after he remained on the ground grabbing his right side.

“My lower rib bone and hip bone hit each other,” Heyward told ESPN. “Got pushed up against the wall, and that was it.”

Heyward will not be placed on the DL, but Matt Szczur was activated from the DL on Saturday.
